Laser therapy, or “photobiomodulation”, is the use of specific wavelengths of light to create therapeutic effects. These effects include improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling.
Cold laser is a painless treatment option that is performed in the clinic and a specific treatment protocol will be determined for your pet based on their condition and needs. No sedation is needed and the experience is usually pleasant and comforting to your pet. Some patients will benefit from daily treatments for acute conditions, while others may benefit from chronic therapy performed less frequently. Most patients will show signs of improvement within 3-8 treatments and the effects are cumulative, meaning that the more they receive, the greater the benefits are.
During each painless treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen and nutrients to the damaged area. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasm, stiffness and pain. As the injured area returns to normal, the function is restored and pain is relieved.
Scientifically proven benefits are also created at the cellular level with each treatment. The infrared laser light increases metabolic activity within the cell, improving the transport of nutrients across the cell membrane. This increases the production of ATP, which is cellular energy, and this leads to a cascade of beneficial effects.
Here at Up Dog, we use a Class IV laser called a K-laser 4 which also provides a mild, soothing, warm sensation for additional comfort.
Laser treatments are performed separately from rehabilitation or underwater treadmill services, but they can be scheduled on the same day for convenience. Please contact us for more information and pricing on our cold laser services.
